DiCaprio & Scorsese: A Legendary Collaboration Continues

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese, a directorial and acting powerhouse duo, recently shared insights into their enduring creative partnership at Time magazine's "A Year in Time" event in New York City. The conversation, moderated by Scorsese himself, celebrated over two decades of cinematic achievements, spanning from "Gangs of New York" in 2002 to the recent "Killers of the Flower Moon." DiCaprio, honored as Time's 2025 entertainer of the year, expressed profound gratitude for their collaboration, calling it a highlight of his professional and personal life.
A Deep Dive into a Legendary Collaboration
Looking back on their six completed films together – "The Aviator," "The Departed," "Shutter Island," "Gangs of New York," "The Wolf of Wall Street," and "Killers of the Flower Moon" – DiCaprio confessed a singular regret. He wished he had been more of an observer of Scorsese's craft behind the camera. While he finds immense fulfillment in inhabiting his characters, DiCaprio acknowledged a deep admiration for Scorsese's directorial process.
"I would have loved to have been much more of a voyeur... to watch what you do behind the camera," DiCaprio stated. He elaborated that while he has no desire to direct, recognizing his inability to match Scorsese's talent, he would have cherished more opportunities to witness the filmmaking magic unfold from a different perspective.
Scorsese's Artistic Spark and DiCaprio's Unwavering Curiosity
Scorsese, in turn, credited DiCaprio with reigniting his passion for filmmaking, particularly recalling their work on "The Aviator." He lauded DiCaprio's consistent "curiosity, pretty much about everything," as a driving force behind their successful collaborations.
The Seventh Chapter and Future Endeavors
The celebrated pair also offered a glimpse into their next venture, confirming they are embarking on their seventh film together. While details remain under wraps, reports suggest Scorsese will direct DiCaprio alongside Jennifer Lawrence in "What Happens at Night," an adaptation of Peter Cameron's novel. DiCaprio revealed that he and Scorsese engage in extensive debates for months on end regarding every facet of their projects, a process they are currently undertaking for this upcoming film. He teased that the project is "going to be an interesting one," with principal photography scheduled to commence in February.
Scorsese also took a moment to commend DiCaprio's "extraordinary" performance in Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another." DiCaprio's role in this film has positioned him as a strong contender in the current awards season, with the movie being a presumed frontrunner for best picture at the 2026 Academy Awards.
